What Autodesk Inventor 2027 is and what it is for

Inventor is the program used to design a mechanical part starting from a dimensioned sketch: you set the measurements, extrude the solid, and every change to a dimension changes the geometry. Parts come together into assemblies with constraints that reproduce real movement, and the program flags any two components that interfere.

Whatever leaves the model for the shop floor stays attached to it: if the part moves by two millimetres, the figure on the sheet and the line in the component list correct themselves, and nobody has to remember which documents to touch. That is what you feel on revisions, when the paper going round the shop is always the wrong one. On sheet metal the program works out the flat pattern from the bend radius and the thickness, so the cut piece comes back to size once it is folded.

• An Inventor file does not go back
  A part saved with the 2027 does not open with the 2026 nor with any earlier release. There is no save-in-old-format like AutoCAD has: it is the rule that surprises people arriving from 2D.

  Opening an old file with the 2027 means converting it, and the conversion applies to everyone: from that moment the colleague still on the 2026 cannot reopen it.
• Opening is not enough, saving is what counts
  An old file opened with the 2027 stays as it was until you save it. It is the save that converts it, and the conversion cannot be undone.
• The exchange route is STEP
  To deliver to someone on a different release, or on another program, you export to STEP: the geometry arrives whole, the constraints and the history do not.

  An assembly calls dozens of files. The collect command puts them in one folder with the references sorted out: delivering only the assembly file is the classic mistake.
